In 1963 Ford was mad on racing, and introduced the 427 cu in big block engine for racing. It was involved in all sorts of racing, and tried to buy Ferrari, and then built the Ford GT40s to beat Ferrari at Le Mans. Ford started with the Indy V-8s in the GT40s but these were not reliable enough for long distance racing, so they tried the 289 cu in engine before switching to the 427 cu in V-8.

The 427 was also the Ford big block dragracing engine. It was developed from the NASCAR V-8, which was successful but fighting the Chrysler Hemi Head engines. This FE engine powered many potent autos including the Cobra Mk III and the Mustangs. This became the famous 1970′s Fords 427 big block. The Cobras were successful in auto racing in the 1960s.

In fact, the FE engine range went from 332 to 428 cu in, and included the 352 and 361 cu in units. There was also a 427 sohc engine built specially for NASCAR racing, which developed 615 bhp at 7,000 rpm.

Some of these engines are fairly simple to rebuild, but the 427 is quite a complicated engine, and in fact you need advice on rebuilding big block Ford engines if you are tackling a 427 Cammer – the engine with overhead camshafts.
