Chevy’s  502 big block engine is quite a monster that can be tuned to give 500 bhp and 560 lb ft of torque, against the 350 bhp of the standard engine. Of course, this is one of the biggest of the Chevy big block engines, and similar to the big block buick as well. You’ll want to check the chevy big block intake numbers (casting numbers), to make sure that you have got the block you want.

502 big block

You can get 500 bhp using GM Performance parts, starting with the block, which has siamesed bores to give an oversquare engine of 4.6 in bore by 4.0 in stroke. There are plenty of different blocks and heads around, so you need to make sure that you get one that’s right for the job – for example, you need cylinder heads with combustion chambers that are large enough to give the right compression ratio with this  502 big block engine.

You then add bowtie aluminum cylinder heads with standard rockers and hydraulic roller cams and you’re beginning to get there. This is a big engine, so you want large valves in the head, with combustion chamber that is a couple or interconnected and overlapping circles to give some squish but plenty of room around the valves. This is the spec that gives the 502 big block 500 bhp and more.

Again, you need to be careful with the dimensions of the heads you use, and want to get heads with suitable big block chevy intake port dimensions.

In fact, with the 502 big block, you can use intake ports with 200-300 cc in volume and get good power – the bigger the ports, the more the power, but at the expense of low-end torque, so it depends what you want to use the engine for. For a big block buick in a street car, you would do best with big block chevy intake port dimensions at the lower end – 200 to 225 cc.

You can top the engine off with a large four-barrel carburetor sitting on an Edelbrock dual-plane manifold, and you’re all set to turn up a bit of rubber, and smoke your way around with the sheer power you can get from the 502 big block. Of course, you need a free-flow exhaust system to complete the transformation – whether the 502 big block is for a Corvette or this is a big block buick.
